About
Our History
The Hinton Disc Golf Association is a group of dedicated locals who want to bring the sport of Disc Golf to the Hinton community for all ages to enjoy. Here’s a bit of our story:
Fall 2015. We put together a preliminary disc golf event around the Hinton Mountain Bike Park using mobile baskets and had an incredible turnout. Thus began the drive to develop Hinton’s first public disc golf course.
Spring / Summer 2016. We were excited to start working on course development along with the Town of Hinton and Alberta Government to get the project off the ground. We registered as a Not-For-Profit Society, found a great piece of land to layout a course, and began course design and clearing of 18 holes. Our site for the Hinton Disc Golf Course is located off Robb Road across from the HMBA Bike Park, and has easy access immediately off of the Town trail to Thompson Lake.
What is Disc Golf?
Disc Golf is played like traditional “ball” golf, but with flying discs instead of balls and clubs. One point (stroke) is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The goal is to play each hole from tee off to basket in the fewest strokes possible. The player with the lowest total strokes for the entire course wins.
The game is simple to learn, only requires an inexpensive disc in order to begin enjoying the sport, and most courses are free to play. There are thousands of public disc golf courses across North America; over 22 communities in Alberta have courses.
Rules of Play
A great summary of the basic rules of disc golf can be found at the Disc Golf Association’s web page:

What You’ll Need
Disc golfers recommend specially designed--though inexpensive--disc golf discs. Beginners can bring their own frisbees or plastic dinner plate (or ceramic/porcelain if you are a happy Greek) or whatever, just to get you started. The HDGA has club discs that we can lend out if you’re interested in trying it out before purchasing your own. These can be obtained at the Hinton Visitors Centre. We’re confident that you will want to purchase your own in the long run! Discs can be purchased at King Drug or Maximum Outfitters.
